Apartment Fraud

Also on official websites you will find very tempting apartment offers. Please be warned that such offers often come from fraudsters who simply advertise non-existent rooms or apartments. Also see this thread in an online forum.

The advertiser often claims that he is abroad and therefore cannot show the apartment or hand over the key in person. Instead he will send you a long contract you have to send him back, sometimes together with a copy of your ID or passport. If you agree to rent the apartment you are immediately requested to pay one or a few months’ rental payments in advance. This money will be lost and you will never receive an apartment-key.

All adverts published on www.wohnen.ethz.ch have individually been verified by us. Nevertheless, infrequently there can be found an advert stemming from a fraudster on our website too. Please be careful and apply the precautionary measures described above. ETH does not assume any liability for financial loss caused by one of our advertisers.

• Never transfer money or make any payments before you haven't seen the room or the apartment.
• If you are suspicious about your future landlord/landlady ask us or a trusted person in Switzerland what we think about the offer.
• Keep a record of all correspondence and inform us immediately if you think that one of our advertisements originates from a fraudster.

Contribution of CHF 20

As of August 2011 the contribution of CHF 20 to advertise accommodation on our website is mandatory. For students the contribution remains voluntary.

Rooms for over CHF 1'000

Please remember that you will probably not find a tenant for a room for over CHF 1'000.
